APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship* in Psychology – Niigimowinmiiwinzha

Our mission is to ensure access to quality healthcare for the community and others in need via our APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship. The Indian Health Board (IHB) of Minneapolis is committed to increasing the number of psychology professionals with culturally-aware training and clinical experiences to serve the American Indian community

As such, our internship in clinical psychology is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association and is a member of the Association for Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) which accepts two psychology interns each year.

IHB’s guiding philosophy for the psychology training program is to equip developing professionals in psychology with the skills required to serve the diverse and complex mental health needs of the urban American Indian community and others in need. This focus ultimately serves to reduce health disparities among American Indian peoples while providing psychology interns with diverse and comprehensive training opportunities that draw upon the wealth of programs offered through IHB and its community partners.

These training opportunities include urban outpatient treatment, psychological evaluations, collaborative opportunities with culturally-specific schools and other agencies, and topic- or diagnosis-specific group therapy. Many of these opportunities are interdisciplinary in nature, both onsite and in collaboration with community partners.

The Ojibwe name for our doctoral internship and training program is Niigimowinmiiwinzha, which is translated into English as “Heal that which seems to be getting the best of us.”

“We’re proud of how we’ve equipped our trainees for 20 years with trauma-informed clinical skills, historical trauma & cultural awareness experiences, and the opportunity for professional self-identity development. These are some of the basics of working successfully for the urban Native American community.”
